Welcome to the August 15th edition of The Homeschool Mother’s Journal at NextGen Homeschool!

This week was all about getting myself organized and our homeschool area prepped for the new homeschool year. My daughters helped me go through our school supplies inventory and figure out what we needed, and I used a $20 OfficeMax rewards certificate earned by returning empty printer ink cartridges earlier this summer to pay for most of what we needed. For more ideas on how to save money on homeschool expenses each year, see this post from our 31 Days of Homeschool How-To Series.

Next, I printed out everything we need to get started with our new once-a-week academic homeschool program, Artios Academies. It’s not a co-op by definition because the classes are taught by paid teachers (although I will be teaching one of the classes), however it’s not just an “enrichment” program either: The classes will encompass most of our core subjects. The in-class day includes five classes — history, grammar/literature/composition, music, theater and art — that are centered around the same historical time period, and the curriculum we use in class will extend into the rest of our week at home. Along with the five core classes offered by the program, we’re doing an optional science track. All that’s left for me to plan on my own this year is math — and we’re going to stick with Math-U-See because it’s been very effective for my girls.

What about you? Are you still preparing for the new homeschool year, or are you “back to school” this week? What changes, if any, have you made to your curriculum or activity plans for this year?
